What Constitutes a Heating Emergency?

It's important to know when to call for immediate emergency help. You should contact us straight away if you're experiencing any of the following:

  • No Heating or Hot Water: If your boiler has completely broken down, leaving you without any heating or hot water, especially during colder months.
  • Gas Leak (Suspected): If you smell gas, or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds. (See important immediate advice below!)
  • Boiler Breakdown & No Heat: Your boiler is showing fault codes, making strange noises, or has stopped working, leading to a complete loss of heating.
  • Water Leak from Boiler or Heating System: Any significant water leak from your boiler, pipes, or radiators that you cannot control.
  • Noisy Boiler or System: Loud banging, whistling, or gurgling noises that indicate a serious underlying issue.

What To Do In A Heating Emergency (Immediate Steps)

Your safety is our top priority. If you're experiencing a heating emergency, please follow these crucial steps immediately before our engineer arrives:

If you smell gas

  • DO NOT turn electrical switches on or off.
  • DO NOT use matches or lighters.
  • Open all windows and doors to ventilate the property.
  • Turn off your gas supply at the meter, if it's safe to do so.
  • Evacuate the property and call JTM Heating Ltd immediately from a safe distance.

If you have a water leak

  • Turn off your mains water supply at the stopcock (usually under your kitchen sink or near your front door).
  • Turn off your heating system/boiler.
  • Collect leaking water in buckets to prevent further damage.

For boiler breakdowns

(with no gas smell/leak)

  • Check your boiler's pressure gauge and ensure it's topped up (refer to your boiler manual or our general advice page if applicable).
  • Check your thermostat settings and timer.
  • Try re-setting the boiler (again, refer to manual if unsure). If it doesn't work after a couple of tries, call us.
